La historia de Sotogrande está ligada a la historia del Santa María Polo Club, un club cuya semilla se sembró en 1965 con la mítica cancha de la Playa, en 1971 se jugó por primera vez la mítica Copa de Oro y desde entonces, hasta nuestros días, el Santa María Polo Club y Sotogrande han crecido de la mano.

The first Golden Cup was won by Casarejo Portales, from the team of Pedro Domecq de la Riva. Since then, more than 20 tournaments made more than 20 champions. With regards to history, a thunderstorm in 1984, destroyed the field on the beach. In 1974 however, the field in Paniagua was inaugurated. In 1985 fields of canchas Puente de Hierro I and II were founded. Further in 1995 San Enrique de Guadiaro and in 2003 the new fields of los Pinos were inaugurated. It is since 1997 that the Golden Cup enjoys the patronage of Sotogrande and Chrysler.
