This village, located in the heart of the National Park de los Alcornocales, is the most interior of the Campo de Gibraltar. It has more than 10.000 inhabitants, shared between different localities like Jimena de la Frontera, San Martín del Tesorillo, Los Ángeles, San Pablo de Buceite, Montenegral and Marchenilla. Its borders are the Serranía of Ronda and the localities of Casares, Gaucín and Cortes de la Frontera in Málaga to the east, San Roque to the south, Castellar to the southeast and Alcalá de los Gazules to the east.
The origines of Jimena de la Frontera go back according to the remains found to the Palaeolithic ages. Furthermore, traces of the Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs are also part of the heritage of this place.
Of its monuments, the Castillo (castle) is one of the most impressive witnesses of the Medieval Ages, the start of its construction dates back to the 9th Century. In 1931 it was declared Monument of Historic Arts. Another distinguished example of historical art are the paintings in the cave of Laja Alta and the Necropolis of Buceite. Also well worth seeing are the Iglesia de la Misericordia and the Santuario de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles.
Every year an international Ethnic Music Festival is held in Jimena de la Frontera and known artists like Carlinhos Brown, El Bicho, Javier Rubial, Daniel Casares, Los Chicos del Coro, Noa, Estrella Morente, Paco Cifuentes, Tomatito, Pasión Vega, los Rebujitos, José Mercé, Diana Navarro, SFDK and many more were participating in the past, making this festival to a great international event. |
